Reviewer guidelines

As a reviewer for Mycological Spectrum, your expertise is essential to maintaining the high standards and scientific rigor of our journal. We deeply appreciate your commitment to the advancement of mycological research. To support your efforts, we ask that you adhere to the following guidelines throughout the review process.

Upon receiving a review invitation, please promptly assess your ability to evaluate the manuscript. Consider whether the topic falls within your area of expertise, whether any conflicts of interest exist, and whether you can complete the review within the designated timeframe. If you are unable to review, we kindly request that you decline the invitation as soon as possible so the manuscript can be reassigned.

Confidentiality is a core aspect of the peer review process. Manuscripts under review should not be shared or discussed with anyone not directly involved in the editorial process. Additionally, information obtained during the review should not be used for personal or professional gain.

When beginning your review, read the abstract and introduction carefully to understand the scope and objectives of the research. Evaluate the methodology to determine if it is appropriate and clearly described. Assess the results for clarity and validity, and ensure that data analyses are accurately performed. Consider whether the discussion and conclusions are well-supported by the data and appropriately situated within the existing literature. The references should be checked for relevance, completeness, and correctness.

Your feedback should be constructive, respectful, and professional. Focus your comments on the content rather than the authors. Aim to provide clear, specific, and actionable suggestions that help improve the manuscript. It is also helpful to acknowledge the strengths of the work in addition to its weaknesses.

In preparing your review report, begin with a brief summary of the manuscript’s objectives and findings. Follow this with any major concerns that could impact the validity or clarity of the research, and then note any minor issues, such as typographical errors or formatting inconsistencies. Conclude your report with a recommendation: accept, minor revisions, major revisions, or reject.

We ask that you submit your review within the specified timeline. If you anticipate needing more time, please inform the editorial office as early as possible.

After your review is submitted, you may be contacted for follow-up discussions or asked to review a revised version of the manuscript. Your continued engagement is valuable and appreciated.

By following these guidelines, you help ensure that Mycological Spectrum publishes work of the highest quality and integrity. We thank you for your time, effort, and invaluable contributions to the peer review process.
